Know your setup.
The app supports Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later. A supported Mac does not guarantee every hardware control works on every display.
Hardware controls
Brightness, contrast, monitor volume, RGB gains, and input switching use DDC/CI. Support depends on your display, firmware, cable, input, and dock. Enable DDC/CI in your display’s own menu when available.
USB-C carrying DisplayPort Alt Mode and supported native HDMI connections can work. A USB-C socket alone does not establish compatibility. Apple Studio Display and Pro Display XDR require separate hardware-control support that this release does not include. Intel hardware control is not included.
Resolution and appearance
The app offers supported modes reported by macOS, with a 15-second automatic revert when previewing a change. Resolution controls can be available when DDC hardware controls are unavailable.
HiDPI labels describe rendering; they do not promise that a panel’s physical resolution can change. The app does not create custom HiDPI modes or virtual displays, or calibrate colours. Copying a MacBook’s colour profile to another panel is not measured colour matching.
What has been tested?
The first physical smoke pass on an LG display verified brightness adjustment and restoration, supported HiDPI mode switching, the automatic 15-second revert, and Keep from Settings. The built-in and LG displays were selectable, with DDC controls disabled for the built-in display. Input switching was not tested.
Non-LG displays, two external displays, and sleep/reconnect recovery still need physical verification before broader compatibility is claimed. Source builds and automated checks do not replace these tests.
The current release is Mac Display Companion 0.4.6, including display selection, resolution controls, automatic hardware recovery, and in-app updates.
